Branding Basics: How to Build a Memorable Brand Identity

A strong brand makes every other piece of marketing easier. When people recognise and trust you, your ads perform better, your posts get more engagement and customers choose you over cheaper alternatives. Here are the building blocks.

Start with strategy, not design

Before choosing colours or fonts, answer three questions: Who is your ideal customer? What problem do you solve for them? Why should they pick you instead of a competitor? The answers become your positioning and guide every design decision.

Design a simple, flexible logo

The best logos are simple enough to recognise at a glance, even at small sizes on a phone screen. Create versions for light and dark backgrounds and a compact icon for social media profiles.

Choose a consistent colour palette and fonts

Pick one or two main brand colours, a few supporting colours and one or two fonts. Use them everywhere – website, social posts, ads, visiting cards – so people start to recognise you before they even read your name.

Find your brand voice

Are you friendly and playful, or calm and expert? Write down a few words that describe how you sound, and a few you never want to sound like. A consistent voice makes your content feel like it comes from one personality.

Write simple brand guidelines

  • Logo versions and spacing rules
  • Colour codes and font names
  • Tone-of-voice examples
  • Photo and graphic style examples

Share these guidelines with everyone who creates content for you. Consistency, repeated over time, is what turns a business into a brand.
