SEO for Small Businesses: A Practical Beginner’s Guide

Search engine optimisation (SEO) sounds technical, but at its heart it is simple: help Google understand your business so it can show you to the people already searching for what you sell. For a small business, that can mean a steady flow of enquiries without paying for every click.

1. Start with the right keywords

Think like your customer. What would they type into Google when they need you? Write down service + location phrases such as “dental clinic in Mohali” or “wedding photographer Chandigarh”. Use free tools like Google Keyword Planner and Search Console to see which phrases people actually use, and pick one main keyword for each important page.

2. Fix the basics on every page

  • Write a clear, unique page title that includes the main keyword.
  • Add a meta description that tells searchers why they should click.
  • Use one H1 heading and logical subheadings.
  • Compress images and add descriptive alt text.
  • Link related pages together so visitors and Google can find them.

3. Claim your Google Business Profile

For local businesses, this is the single most valuable free step. Complete every field, choose accurate categories, add real photos, keep your opening hours up to date and ask happy customers for reviews. Reply to every review – good or bad.

4. Make your website fast and mobile-friendly

Most searches now happen on phones. If your site is slow or hard to use on a small screen, people leave and Google notices. Test your pages with Google PageSpeed Insights and fix the biggest issues first, usually oversized images and too many plugins.

5. Publish helpful content consistently

Answer the questions your customers ask you every week. A short guide, a price explainer or a “how to choose” article builds trust and gives Google more reasons to rank you. Consistency matters more than volume.

6. Measure and improve

Connect Google Search Console and Google Analytics 4. Watch which pages get impressions but few clicks (improve their titles) and which pages get traffic but no enquiries (improve their calls to action). SEO is a compounding investment: small improvements every month add up.
